Project Overview

This is an Afforestation/Reforestation (ARR) project that restores degraded coastal land in southern Myanmar by planting and protecting mangrove forests. Registered under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the project restores tidal mangrove ecosystems to capture carbon, protect shorelines, and provide long-term benefits for local communities.

Where and how big

  • Location: Ayeyarwady Delta, southern Myanmar.
  • Size: Over 2,000 hectares of degraded coastal land targeted for mangrove planting and natural regeneration, with potential to scale to tens of thousands of hectares.
  • Implementer: Worldview International Foundation (WIF) in collaboration with local communities and authorities.

How credits are created and verified

  • Project type: Afforestation/Reforestation (ARR).
  • Verified credits are issued based on measured carbon sequestration from newly established mangrove biomass and verified by independent auditors before appearing on the Verra registry.

Key benefits

Climate

  • Mangroves sequester large amounts of carbon in both trees and soils. Verified credits represent measurable removals of CO₂ from the atmosphere.
  • Over the project’s crediting period, millions of tonnes of CO₂ are expected to be removed through restored mangrove forests.

Nature & biodiversity

  • Restored mangroves provide habitat for fish, crustaceans, and birdlife, and support broader coastal biodiversity.
  • They stabilize shorelines, reduce erosion, and buffer communities from storms and flooding.

Community & development

  • Local villagers are engaged in planting and long-term care of the mangroves, creating jobs and alternative livelihoods.
  • The project promotes sustainable aquaculture and agroforestry alongside reforestation to support community income.
  • Training and educational programs build local capacity in conservation and natural resource management.

Project significance

Supporting this project helps restore some of the most carbon-dense and threatened ecosystems on Earth. Mangroves in Myanmar have been heavily degraded, but through this initiative they are being replanted and protected under the oversight of Verra’s VCS framework. Each credit purchased represents verified carbon removal, while also helping to protect coastal communities, biodiversity, and livelihoods in one of Asia’s most climate-vulnerable regions.
