Project Overview

Every day in Kenya’s rapidly expanding urban settlements, untreated sanitation and organic waste produce methane – a greenhouse gas up to 80 times more potent than CO₂ in the short term. The Sanergy Collective turns that waste liability into an asset by safely collecting sanitation and organic waste and converting it into compost/fertilizer, energy briquettes and animal-feed protein - thereby avoiding methane emissions and displacing imported fossil-fuel based synthetic fertilizers.

By purchasing credits from this project, you’re helping to:

  • Drive real emission reductions from waste streams that would otherwise degrade and release methane.
  • Support a circular-economy solution that links sanitation, waste-upcycling and small-holder agriculture.
  • Deliver measurable social and environmental benefits in one of the world’s fastest-growing cities.

Project Details

  • Standard & Registration: Verra's Verified Carbon Standard. Each credit represents one tonne of CO₂e avoided through independently verified methane-reduction activities.
  • Project Type: Methane avoidance from sanitation and organic-waste management, achieved by diverting waste from open decomposition and converting it into compost, insect-protein animal feed, and biomass briquettes.
  • Developer: Sanergy Inc. and affiliated entities, a Kenyan circular-economy enterprise specializing in waste-to-value solutions.
  • Location: Kenya – primarily Nairobi’s informal settlements and surrounding regions.

Key Benefits

Climate

  • Methane-Focused Emission Reductions: Avoids powerful methane emissions that would otherwise result from uncontrolled degradation of organic and sanitation waste — a greenhouse gas more than 80 times stronger than CO₂ in the short term.

  • Circular-Economy & Agricultural Co-Benefits: Transforms waste into high-value products such as compost and insect-protein feed, improving soil fertility, supporting smallholder farmers, and reducing dependence on imported synthetic fertilizers.

Economic & Community Co-Benefits

  • Improved Sanitation & Public Health: Provides safe waste collection and treatment in low-income communities, significantly reducing environmental contamination and disease risk.

  • Economic & Social Development: Creates local jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities through franchise sanitation operators, waste-collection services, and compost-processing facilities.

Verified Transparency & Scaling

  • High Additionality & Integrity: The project addresses a critical sanitation and waste-management gap in urban Kenya that would not be economically viable without carbon-finance support. All credits are verified, additional, and transparently issued under the VCS framework.

  • Scalable Climate Impact: Each credit purchased contributes directly to expanding waste-processing capacity, allowing more organic material to be safely treated and upcycled — generating greater avoided emissions in future vintages.

By purchasing credits from the Sanergy Composting Group Project, you help transform urban waste into climate action — reducing methane emissions, improving sanitation, and supporting a circular economy in Kenya.
